Abstract | Due to the unique mechanism of photoelectron storage and release, long persistent phosphorescence (also known as long persistent luminescence or long-lasting afterglow) plays a crucial role in fields such as spectroscopy, photochemistry, photonics, and materials science. The phenomenon of persistent luminescence, where a luminescent material continues emitting light after the excitation source is removed, has fascinated researchers for centuries. In this review, we explore the mechanisms of afterglow, material systems, and applications of long persistent phosphors (LPPs). We discuss possible mechanisms that involve changes in trap distribution during the trapping and de-trapping processes, complex photo-ionization reactions of trap site levels and impurity centers, as well as the corresponding carrier migration kinetics. Additionally, we focus on defect characterization techniques, which help qualitatively or quantitatively describe the types, concentrations, and depths of the traps. |
