Transformation in Infant Mortality Rates in India: Mortality Indicators as Major Tool for Indicating Status of Nation’s Health

Author(s) Dr. Azhar Ali, Dr. Saloni Sidana
Country India
Abstract Background: Mortality is important to study population change; infant mortality is a principal component balancing child sex ratio. This study analyzed differences in mortality indicators between urban and rural areas and quantified changes over 2006–2016.
Methods: Secondary data from Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletins were analyzed using percent change and paired t-tests.
Results: Total infant mortality rate reduced from 57 (2006) to 34 (2016) — a 67.65% reduction. Paired t-tests indicate significant changes (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Declining infant mortality reflects improvements in maternal and child health programs; continued emphasis on neonatal care and women’s health is recommended.
