Abstract The twenty-first century is witnessing unprecedented environmental, social, and economic challenges- climate change, biodiversity loss, social inequalities, and resource depletion are just a few of the critical issues facing humanity. In this context, education has emerged as an effective transformational tool. Education for Sustainability (EfS) is no longer a niche concept, but an essential framework for empowering individuals, communities, and societies to make informed and responsible decisions for a sustainable future. EfS is the integration of sustainability principles into all levels and types of education. It goes beyond teaching environmental knowledge and emphasises the development of values, skills, and attitudes that promote sustainable development. EfS encourages individuals to engage critically with their environment and society, fostering a deeper understanding of interconnected systems and collective responsibility. It is founded on the philosophy of lifelong learning and global citizenship. This paper investigates the concept, significance, methodologies, challenges, and future directions of education for sustainability in the twenty-first century.
