Ritual Life of the Sabara Community: A Study of Life-cycle and Agricultural Practices in Jajpur District, Odisha

| Abstract | Abstract: Sabara community of the Odisha is one of the tribal communities that retained a social cultural identity through practices of rituals and beliefs. The study explores the ritual life of Sabara community of Badacahana block, Jajpur district of Odisha, particularly life cycle and agricultural rituals of Sabara community, the study area is five Sabara villages Neliasahi, Duburi Sahi, Bali Sahi, Guljarnagar Patana and Kesarapada (Darpani) of Darpan gram panchayat in Badachana block. The aim of this study is to describe and analyse the major life-cycle rituals practiced by the Sabara community in Jajpur District, to study agricultural rituals and their cultural significance in the socio-economic life of Sabara people and to explore the changes and continuities in the life-cycle and agricultural rituals practices under the influence of modernization and non-tribal cultural forces. This study focuses tribal community particularly on the Sabara tribe in Jajpur district of Odisha. Sabara tribe is mostly believed in worship the village deity. They believed that their all tradition is blessing from Goddess and consider it their duty to follow all rituals with due observance. |
