Abstract The overall harmony distortion (THD) valuesrecorded during the charging of numerous productionelectric cars at various starting states of charge—whenpossible—using both the 13A & 32A rechargingmodes—are reported in this study. The total harmonicdistortion (THD) of several electric vehicles withcomparably powerful on-board chargers varies, howeverthey all largely remained within the law. For one type of
onboard charger, the measured total harmonic distortion(THD) ranged from 2 to 4%, while for a different kind, itreached up to 12%. 32A chargers using 13A mode exceededthe harmonic voltage limitations established for 13Achargers, even though individual harmonics of current met
with standards. Using an Indian sample network, the studyalso ran simulations to evaluate the effects of distortioncaused by harmonics on small-voltage networks. Thefindings suggested that there was little chance of noticeablevoltage harmonic distortion on the substation. Certain
vehicle types have the capacity to charge at each residencewithout resulting in severe voltage harmonic distortion; thevehicle type with the lowest performance can charge at up to87% of houses at the same time. Nevertheless, becausechargers outputting the maximum allowed currentharmonics could result in extremely high levels ofdistortion, the investigation revealed shortcomings in theUK laws covering 32A vehicle chargers. This emphasizesthe necessity of reviewing regulatory requirements to handleproblems brought on by harmonic distortion in the
systems that charge electric vehicles.
