Examining the Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Automation Technologies on Labour Market Structures, Employment Patterns, and Skill Requirements

This paper presents an analytical examination of how artificeial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies are reshaping contemporary labour markets. Drawing on recent empirical studies and established theoretical perspectives, the analysis focuses on three key dimensions: structural shifts within labour markets, changing employment patterns, and the evolving demand for skills. The findings indicate that AI and automation are not merely eliminating jobs but are redefining the task composition within occupations, resulting in substantial occupational restructuring and displacement alongside the creation of new roles. These technologies contribute to increased productivity, operational efficiency, and firm-level growth; however, their effects are unevenly distributed across sectors, skill categories, and demographic groups. Routine and low-skill tasks are particularly vulnerable to automation, while demand is increasing for cognitive, technical, and socio-emotional skills. The paper highlights the widening inequality risks associated with technological adoption and stresses the need for proactive policy interventions. It concludes by outlining strategies for managing the transition, including reskilling initiatives, strengthened social protection systems, and regulatory frameworks that support inclusive and sustainable technological integration. Ultimately, the paper argues that successful adaptation will depend on preparing workforces for a future characterized by human machine complementarity rather than substitution.
