Sex-Based Disparities in Blood Disease Research: Current Knowledge Gaps and Future Directions

Abstract	Historically, biomedical research has relied heavily on male study populations, often assuming that findings can be generalized across sexes. Increasing evidence suggests that blood diseases, including anemia, hemophilia, and leukemia, may affect women differently because of hormonal, genetic, and physiological factors. Despite these differences, women have frequently been underrepresented in hematologic research, resulting in diagnostic limitations and an incomplete understanding of disease progression. This review examines biological factors influencing blood diseases in women, identifies gaps in current research, and discusses future directions to improve sex-specific understanding of hematologic disorders. Addressing these gaps may improve diagnostic accuracy, treatment effectiveness, and scientific understanding of blood diseases across diverse patient populations.
