Shattered Minds and Reclaimed Strength: Madness, Mental Illness, and Emotional Resilience in Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights

Abstract This research paper analyses how mental illness interplays with psychological trauma, portraying emotional resilience within the foundational Victorian writings of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. Using a feminist and psychoanalytic approach, the study shows how social restrictions, unresolved trauma, and psychological fragmentation shape the identity and behavioral patterns of the characters. Through characters like Bertha and Heathcliff, this paper demonstrates how confinement and emotional extremes can destroy human potential, and through restrictive rules, Jane Eyre and Cathy Linton illustrate how emotional resilience transforms lives. Through the Gothic environment of Thornfield Hall and the Yorkshire moors, the authors portray the inner turmoil of their characters, which intensifies isolation, repression, and the dilemma of identity. The study contextualizes the Victorian period’s views of mental illness and gender to show how the Brontes illustrate societal norms and, at the same time, how humans can heal and reclaim themselves. These stories are timeless because they discuss important human psychological issues along with powerful emotional survival capabilities.
