“Challenges and Prospects of Floriculture: A case study of Dimapur and Chumoukedima Districts of Nagaland.”

Abstract Abstract:
Floriculture is a branch of horticulture concerned with the cultivation, production, and marketing of flowering and ornamental plants. It encompasses a wide range of activities, including the cultivation of cut flowers, bedding plants, potted plants, and foliage for aesthetic, commercial, and landscaping purposes. In recent years, there has been a notable shift in occupational preferences toward the floriculture sector due to its economic viability and growing market demand. The sector contributes significantly to employment generation, income creation, and livelihood enhancement, thereby supporting regional and national economic development. Factors such as cost-effectiveness, adaptability to diverse growing environments, improved transportation and communication networks, and relatively low capital requirements have facilitated the expansion of the floriculture industry. In Nagaland, the increasing demand for flowers and ornamental plants for social, cultural, and religious events, as well as for household beautification, has created considerable opportunities for the growth of floriculture. This study examines the challenges and prospects of floriculture in Dimapur and Chümoukedima districts of Nagaland, with a focus on its economic potential, existing constraints, and future development opportunities.
