| Abstract | Employee retention has emerged as a strategic concern among private higher education institutions (PHEIs) due to increasing competition for qualified academic and administrative personnel. This study examines the influence of talent management practices on employee retention within PHEIs in Malaysia and Indonesia. Specifically, the research investigates the effects of training and development, performance appraisal, compensation and benefits, and career development on employee retention. A quantitative research design was employed using a cross-sectional survey approach. Data were collected from academic and administrative staff employed in selected private higher education institutions in both countries. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The findings indicate that talent management practices significantly influence employee retention. Career development and training opportunities were identified as the strongest predictors of employee retention among Malaysian respondents, whereas work-life balance and supportive organizational culture demonstrated greater significance among Indonesian respondents. The study contributes to the growing literature on talent management within higher education by providing comparative evidence from two Southeast Asian countries with distinct institutional and cultural environments. The findings further offer practical implications for university administrators and policymakers in designing context-specific human resource strategies to improve workforce stability and institutional sustainability. |
