A Qualitative Study on Emotional Dissonance and Toxic Positivity among Postgraduate Psychology Students

| Abstract | The pressure to be positive and Differences in the emotions of what they feel inside and what they show outside, especially in terms of postgraduate psychology students is what this research explores about. Toxic positivity talks about the pressure to be positive, and emotional dissonance talks the discrepancy between what they feel inside and what they show outside. This qualitative study uses phenomenological approach to study the lives experiences of people and semi structured telephonic interview was conducted on 19 participants including both male and female across India. Using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis , the data were analysed and 8 themes such as societal expectations, family beliefs, personality of the person, stigmas and misconceptions about psychology, emotional labour, authenticity and the experiences oneself went through in life, expectations from professional and academic settings and their own sense of responsibility and beliefs of postgraduate psychology influences the regulations of emotions leading to pressure of being positive or faking the emotion they felt inside. The need for authenticity and support to hear out the issues can reduce the vulnerability and stress that psychology students going through, the study also highlights the personality differences and that contributes to the important aspect of emotions that one can go through in life. |
