Reading and Study Habits in English Teaching and Learning: Their Contribution to Academic Success and Lifelong Learning

Abstract Reading and study habits are essential determinants of English language learning, academic achievement and lifelong learning. This paper examines the role of effective reading practices and study strategies in enhancing students' language proficiency, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing skills, critical thinking, learner autonomy, and self-regulated learning. It also discusses the influence of learner motivation, digital learning environments, and contemporary educational practices on students' learning behaviors. Evidence from existing research indicates that students who cultivate regular reading habits and employ effective study strategies consistently demonstrate higher academic performance and stronger English language competence. The paper further highlights the crucial role of English teachers in fostering meaningful reading experiences and promoting evidence-based study practices through learner-centered pedagogy. The findings emphasize that integrating effective reading and study habits into English teaching and learning can significantly improve academic success, support independent learning and prepare learners for lifelong learning in an increasingly knowledge-based and digitally connected world.
