Participation of Media in the Context of Children with Disabilities: a Critical Analysis

| Abstract | This current attempt has been made to discuss about the participation of media in the lives of children’s with disabilities that what kind of role media is playing in the context of disability? In modern times, media plays a very significant and powerful role. Images, stories in the media can deeply influence public opinion and establish societal norms. Presently there are one billion or 15 percent of the world’s population is concerned with disabilities. Both the developed and developing countries, evidence suggests that persons with disabilities disproportionately represented among the world’s poor and tend to be poorer than their counterparts without disabilities. Economic and social exclusion is a part of the daily lives of person with disabilities and is a breach of human rights and a major development challenge. The rich diversity of our society inclusive of all its members including persons with disabilities can help strengthen fundamental human rights and contribute to development for all persons with disabilities. It is not uncommon to see persons with disabilities treated as pity objects, charity or medical treatment have to overcome a tragic and disabling condition or conversely, presented as superheroes who have accomplished a great feats, so as to inspire the non-disabled. The depiction of disability in the media plays a major role in molding the public perception of disability. Perception portrayed in the media directly influence the way people with disabilities are treated in current society. Media platform cited as the key site of for the reinforcement of negative images and ideas in regard to people with disabilities. In this whole criteria, children’s with disabilities are much more suffering with this phenomenon rather than youth with any kind of disability. Disabled children grow up in an ablest world that discriminates against people with disabilities and denies them full representation in all aspects of society, including in the media. This paper aim to explore the impact of media on children’s with disabilities. |
