Abstract Barium aluminate (BaAl₂O₄) is an alkaline-earth aluminate ceramic that has attracted significant attention owing to its exceptional structural stability, wide optical band gap, excellent thermal resistance, and versatile physicochemical properties. The hexagonal stuffed tridymite-type framework of BaAl₂O₄ provides a robust host lattice for rare-earth activators, enabling efficient persistent luminescence with high quantum efficiency and prolonged afterglow. In addition to its well-established role as a phosphor host, BaAl₂O₄ has recently emerged as a multifunctional material for electrochemical energy storage, photocatalysis, dielectric devices, humidity sensing, catalyst supports, hydrogen storage, and flexible electronics. The combination of high chemical stability, low dielectric loss, environmental compatibility, and structural durability further broadens its technological importance. Furthermore, the integration of BaAl₂O₄ with conducting polymers, carbonaceous materials, and transition-metal oxides has significantly improved its electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance, making it a promising candidate for advanced supercapacitor electrodes. This review highlights the crystal structure, physicochemical properties, synthesis strategies, and multifunctional applications of BaAl₂O₄, emphasizing its potential for next-generation energy, environmental, and optoelectronic technologies.
