Fidelity of the Movie to the Novel, Twelve Years a Slave, Concerning Slave Narrative Elements

Abstract	Black history and the legacy of slavery are closely connected and remain significant aspects of world history, particularly in the southern regions of the United States. The institution of slavery subjected millions of African Americans to bondage and the authority of white slaveholders. Their experiences have been represented in numerous novels and literary works. However, many formerly enslaved individuals also began documenting their own experiences in literary form. Through these autobiographical accounts, they contributed to the development of a distinct literary genre known as the slave narrative. Twelve Years a Slave depicts the life of Solomon Northup, a free Black man whose liberty was stolen when he was kidnapped and sold into slavery. The work was later adapted for the screen by Steve McQueen in 2013. This research investigated the slave narrative elements in the novel and its movie adaptation. The aim of the research was to compare the slave narrative elements in the novel and its movie adaptation by adapting Linda Hutcheon’s ‘adaptation theory’.
