Abstract This paper presents a simulation-based study of the Perturb and Observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for photovoltaic (PV) energy harvesting systems. A 50 W PV module was modeled in MATLAB/Simulink to evaluate the performance of the P&O algorithm under uniform irradiance, partial shading, and varying irradiance conditions. Simulation results indicate that the P&O algorithm achieves satisfactory performance under uniform irradiance, with an efficiency of approximately 88%. However, under partial shading conditions, the algorithm is unable to track the global maximum power point (GMPP), resulting in reduced power extraction and overall system performance.
