| Abstract | ABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors inhibiting female participation in sporting activities in selected communities of Mufulira District. Female participation in sport has been widely recognized as essential for promoting health, social inclusion, confidence building, and overall well-being among young women and girls. However, in many communities, participation remains low due to various social, cultural, and economic constraints. The researcher adopted a descriptive research design in order to describe in context the factors that hinder females from actively engaging in sporting activities. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed to maximize strengths and minimize limitations of each approach. A total sample of one hundred (100) female respondents was drawn from a target population of three hundred (300) residents across Kantanshi, Kankoyo, and Mukambo communities using purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Furthermore, structured questionnaires and interview guides were used as data collection instruments. The instruments were reviewed by experts for face and content validity, while reliability was established through a pilot study conducted prior to the main data collection. Out of the 100 questionnaires distributed, all were successfully completed and returned, representing a 100% return rate. Tables, pie charts, and bar graphs were employed during data analysis to enhance the presentation of results. The collected data was analyzed using both descriptive statistics and thematic analysis, following the order of the research questions. The findings of the study revealed that cultural beliefs and gender stereotypes strongly discouraged females from participating in sports. Lack of sports facilities, inadequate equipment, and limited financial support were also identified as major barriers. Additionally, negative parental attitudes, safety concerns, and household responsibilities significantly restricted girls’ availability for sports activities. The study concluded that unless communities and stakeholders address these socio-cultural and resource-based constraints, female participation in sport in Mufulira District will remain low. Recommendations include community sensitization, improved funding, provision of adequate sports infrastructure, and the introduction of targeted programs that encourage and support girls’ engagement in sporting activities. |
