The Sum Rule Principle in Combinatorial Mathematics

Abstract Combinatorial mathematics is a branch of mathematics concerned with counting, arrangement, selection, and organization of finite objects. Among its fundamental principles is the Sum Rule Principle, also called the Addition Principle. It provides a simple but powerful method for determining the number of possible outcomes when a problem can be divided into mutually exclusive cases. The principle states that if an outcome can be obtained in one of several disjoint ways, then the total number of outcomes is the sum of the numbers of outcomes associated with each way. This paper presents the mathematical foundation of the Sum Rule Principle, its formal the Sum Rule in probability, computer science, discrete mathematics, and everyday decision-making. The Sum Rule is a combinatorial techniques such as the Inclusion–Exclusion Principle.
