Climate Change and Biodiversity

Abstract Climate change and biodiversity loss are closely connected global environmental challenges. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, droughts, floods, heat waves, wildfires, sea-level rise, and ocean warming are changing natural habitats and affecting the survival, reproduction, and movement of many species. At the same time, the loss and degradation of forests, wetlands, grasslands, mangroves, and other ecosystems reduce the capacity of nature to store carbon and protect communities from climate-related hazards. Biodiversity is important for food, water, soil fertility, medicines, livelihoods, cultural values, and human well-being. This paper examines the relationship between climate change and biodiversity, with particular attention to ecosystem services, human communities, and the Indian context. It reviews major pathways through which climate change affects terrestrial, freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems and explains how biodiversity can support climate mitigation and adaptation. The paper also discusses social dimensions of biodiversity loss, including impacts on rural livelihoods, farmers, forest-dependent communities, women, and other vulnerable groups. It argues that climate policy and biodiversity policy should be planned together. Nature-based solutions, ecosystem restoration, sustainable agriculture, forest and wetland conservation, climate-resilient livelihoods, environmental education, and meaningful community participation can provide multiple benefits when they are designed with ecological and social safeguards. The paper concludes that protecting biodiversity is not only an environmental responsibility but also an important strategy for social well-being, disaster-risk reduction, livelihood security, and sustainable development. Integrated governance, scientific monitoring, local knowledge, and inclusive decision-making are necessary to build climate-resilient societies while maintaining healthy ecosystems
