| Abstract | Background: Hyperacidity (acid dyspepsia) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterised by excessive gastric acid secretion and symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and epigastric discomfort. Ash gourd (Benincasa hispida) has traditional use in gastrointestinal disorders and possesses antioxidant and gastroprotective properties. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of fresh ash gourd juice in reducing gastrointestinal symptoms and improving gastrointestinal quality of life in patients with mild to moderate hyperacidity. Materials and Methods: A single-group pre–post interventional study was conducted on 10 participants (9 female, 1 male; mean age 31.7 ± 13.7 years) with mild to moderate hyperacidity at GNCYMC&H, Mysore. Fresh ash gourd juice was administered daily for 10 days. Outcomes were assessed using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI), and body mass index (BMI) before and after the intervention. Data were analysed using Wilcoxon signed-rank and paired t-tests; effect sizes were expressed as Cohen’s d. Results: All outcomes improved significantly. Mean GSRS decreased from 31.80 ± 13.07 to 8.30 ± 4.06 (Δ −23.50, p = 0.002, d = −2.35). GIQLI increased from 76.60 ± 15.03 to 110.70 ± 12.68 (Δ +34.10, p = 0.002, d = 3.60). BMI decreased from 25.65 ± 4.94 to 25.00 ± 4.74 (Δ −0.65, p = 0.002, d = −1.55). Every participant improved on every measure. Conclusion: Fresh ash gourd juice produced highly significant short-term reductions in gastrointestinal symptoms and BMI and a large improvement in gastrointestinal quality of life in patients with mild to moderate hyperacidity. Larger controlled trials are recommended. |
