Ethnobotanical and Pharmacological Aspects of Bruhatpanchamula: A Critical Review

Abstract Bruhatpanchamula is a traditional Ayurvedic formulation that consists of the roots from five medicinal plants: Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Agnimantha (Clerodendrum phlomidis), Shyonaka (Oroxylum indicum), Patala (Stereospermum suaveolens), and Gambhari (Gmelina arborea). It has historically been used in Ayurveda to address a variety of health issues, such as inflammatory conditions, respiratory illnesses, and digestive problems. Each plant included in this formulation exhibits important pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, and cardioprotective effects, which enhance the therapeutic value of Bruhatpanchamula. The rising global interest in herbal treatments has led to scientific research focusing on the pharmacological effects of Bruhatpanchamula. Nevertheless, despite encouraging findings from preliminary studies, there is a noticeable absence of well-structured clinical trials assessing its safety, efficacy, and mechanisms of action. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the ethnobotanical significance, phytochemical components, and pharmacological potential of Bruhatpanchamula, showcasing its applicability in contemporary medicine. Additionally, it addresses the obstacles related to the standardization and regulatory approval of herbal products. The review underscores the necessity for continued research, including both preclinical and clinical trials, to substantiate the therapeutic claims linked with Bruhatpanchamula and to investigate its possible integration into modern healthcare practices.
