| Abstract | Moringa oleifera Lam. is a nutrient-rich plant with diverse phytochemicals and increasing interest as a potential nutraceutical. This review summarizes published evidence on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and metabolic benefits of M. oleifera and discusses the mechanisms proposed to underlie these effects. Major constituents include flavonoids, phenolic acids, glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, together with vitamins, carotenoids and minerals. Experimental studies suggest that M. oleifera may reduce oxidative stress through direct radical scavenging, enhancement of endogenous antioxidant defenses, modulation of the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and reduction of lipid peroxidation. Anti-inflammatory effects have been associated with modulation of NF-κB signaling and reductions in mediators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, COX-2 and iNOS. Preclinical studies also indicate possible effects on glucose regulation, insulin secretion, lipid metabolism and metabolic syndrome. However, human evidence remains limited and heterogeneous, with differences in plant material, extraction methods, doses, formulations and phytochemical standardization. Safety and long-term clinical efficacy also require further investigation. Overall, M. oleifera shows promising antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and metabolic activities, but standardized preparations and well-designed clinical trials are needed before firm therapeutic or nutraceutical claims can be established. |
