From Marble Trade to Religious Tourism: An Analysis of the Changing Destination Economy of Rajsamand District

Abstract The regional economy of Rajsamand district in Rajasthan is associated with marble extraction and processing, historic heritage, religious sites, lakes, and cultural traditions. While marble-related activities contribute to industrial production, employment, trade, and transport, religious and heritage tourism offer opportunities for service-sector growth, local entrepreneurship, and the diversification of economic activities. This paper examines the relationship between the traditional marble economy and the emerging opportunities associated with religious tourism in Rajsamand district. It explores how pilgrimage, heritage attractions, visitor services, accommodation, transport, retail trade, and local cultural activities can contribute to the changing economic profile of the district. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical research design based on secondary information, conceptual analysis, and relevant literature on tourism development, regional economies, and sustainable destination management. It also considers the challenges associated with infrastructure, environmental sustainability, seasonality, destination marketing, and the distribution of tourism-related benefits among local communities. The paper argues that marble-based industrial development and religious tourism should not necessarily be understood as competing economic models. Rather, a coordinated strategy could support economic diversification by connecting the district's industrial identity, religious heritage, cultural resources, and local enterprise. However, the extent to which tourism is transforming the district's economy must be established through reliable visitor, employment, expenditure, and household-income data. The paper proposes an integrated destination-management framework that links economic diversification with environmental protection, community participation, and responsible tourism practices.
