Manufacturing Truth: Media Propaganda and Political Power in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

| Abstract | This paper examines J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as a political novel that dramatizes how state power operates primarily through media propaganda and the strategic control of information rather than physical force. Drawing upon Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman's framework of "manufacturing consent," Michel Foucault's theories on power and knowledge, and George Orwell's analysis of institutional control over language and thought, the study explores how the Ministry of Magic manufactures a false public reality regarding the return of Lord Voldemort. The research analyzes The Daily Prophet as a captured and compliant press that serves elite political interests through techniques such as selective reporting, strategic omission, ad hominem attacks, repetition, and appeals to authority. Furthermore, it investigates how institutional spaces like Hogwarts—under the enforcement of Dolores Umbridge's Educational Decrees—and disciplinary measures against alternative publications like The Quibbler restrict critical thought and marginalize dissenting voices. Ultimately, the paper demonstrates that the novel critiques the dangerous intersection of media and state authority, revealing that political power relies fundamentally on shaping what society accepts as truth. |
