| Abstract | The Indian aviation sector is growing rapidly and contributing significantly to the country’s economic development, transportation, tourism, employment generation, and infrastructure growth. To improve regional air connectivity and make air travel affordable for common citizens, the Government of India launched the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) Scheme in 2016. The scheme aims to connect underserved and unserved regions through affordable air services and the development of regional airports. This study examines the opportunities, challenges, and overall impact of the UDAN Scheme on regional aviation in India. It highlights the role of the scheme in airport development, passenger growth, employment creation, tourism promotion, and regional economic development. At the same time, the research identifies major challenges such as financial sustainability, inadequate infrastructure, fluctuating fuel prices, low passenger demand on certain routes, and dependence on government subsidies. The study is based on data collected from aviation professionals, government reports, and secondary research sources. A descriptive research approach was used to evaluate the effectiveness and long-term sustainability of the UDAN Scheme. The findings reveal that the UDAN Scheme has significantly improved regional connectivity and created economic opportunities in smaller cities and remote areas. However, continuous policy support, infrastructure modernization, financial assistance, and operational efficiency are necessary for the sustainable growth of regional aviation in India. The study concludes that the UDAN Scheme plays a vital role in strengthening India’s regional aviation network and promoting balanced national development. |
