Individualism and Moral Autonomy in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Self-Reliance

Author(s) Dr. Jitender Singh
Country India
Abstract Self-Reliance (1841), an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, is one of the most important works of American transcendentalism. It encourages people to be independent, not follow the crowd, and believe in their own inner voice. It was written in response to how materialistic and morally conformist American society was becoming in the 1800s. The essay expresses Emerson's view that genuine virtue and genius come from trusting oneself instead of copying what others do. This study paper looks at Self-Reliance as a moral and philosophical manifesto. It does this by looking at its main ideas, which are individualism, nonconformity, intuition, and spiritual independence. The research paper is also placed within the larger intellectual framework of transcendentalism. The study also looks at Emerson's criticism of institutional power and his idea of the perfect person. This shows how important the essay is still today in discussions about freedom, authenticity, and identity.
