Ethical Philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and Its Resonance in Modern French Intellectual and Cultural Discourse: A Comparative Study

Author(s) Mr. Samant Kumar
Country India
Abstract The present paper explores the importance of the ethics of Sri Aurobindo in the context of the current intellectual and cultural discourse in France. For Aurobindo, ethics is not the set of absolute principles but a movement that is a part of the overall development process of consciousness. In “The Human Cycle”, the author introduces the notion of morality as one of the stages in the psychological evolution of a person and society, not the highest and most complete principle of the world (Sri Aurobindo, 1999). His ideas acquire greater significance when discussed against the background of modern French pre-occupations with autonomy, secular morality, universalism, and civic order, which have been present in the intellectual life of the country for centuries (Rendtorff, 2014). The paper employs a qualitative, interpretive methodology based on critical analysis of primary texts written by Sri Aurobindo and relevant secondary literature on his ethics, social philosophy, and general intellectual reception. Historical context will be covered as well, including the Indo-French relations in Pondicherry, and the global spread of the ideas of Sri Aurobindo (Heehs, 2008). Although the philosopher had no practical influence on the ethical life of the French people, his ideas serve as the basis for a comparative analysis of the modern moral issues in French culture.
