Experiential Learning and Student Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analytic Synthesis of Empirical Studies

Abstract Experiential learning is a learner-centred pedagogical approach that has become important and tries to link theoretical knowledge with direct experience, reflection, conceptualisation and application. Although there are a considerable number of empirical studies on the effectiveness of experiential learning in different educational contexts, the literature is fragmented in terms of academic achievement, conceptual understanding, engagement, practical competencies, life skills, and interpersonal development. This study systematically synthesises empirical research on the effectiveness of experiential learning strategies on student outcomes. The literature review for this study identified thirty studies conducted between the years 2000 and 2025. The studies covered secondary education, higher education, professional education, vocational education, science education, engineering, environmental education, mathematics, counselling, leadership, and service learning. The review assessed study design, participants, experiential strategies, outcome variables and major findings. Across the reviewed studies a consistent positive direction of findings was observed. Experiential learning was linked to increased academic achievement, conceptual understanding, higher order thinking, engagement, problem solving, self efficacy, practical skills, communication, collaboration, leadership and other interpersonal skills. Experimental and quasi-experimental studies tended to show better outcomes for students who experienced experiential approaches in comparison with traditional instruction. However, there was substantial methodological heterogeneity in terms of sample characteristics, duration of intervention, outcome measures and implementation settings. The evidence suggests that experiential learning is an effective pedagogical approach, but the source material available does not provide sufficient numerical statistics across all included studies to compute a statistically pooled effect size. The present paper should be interpreted as a systematic and quantitative evidence synthesis, not as a conventional effect-size meta-analysis. The review highlights critical gaps, especially the limited number of studies with secondary school students, science classrooms, Indian educational contexts, and interpersonal skills as explicit outcomes. Future research should use rigorous experimental designs, standardised outcome measures, longer intervention periods, and full reporting of statistical information to allow for future meta-analytic estimation.
