| Abstract | This paper explores the subaltern cultural landscapes of Hyderabad through the lens of Banjara folk songs, examining how oral traditions function as historical archives. Focusing on the narrative frameworks of "Subaltern Chronicles of Bhagya Nagar" and "The Romance of Bhagya Nagar," the study investigates how the Lambada/Banjara community uses local folk music to anchor their identity, history, and socio-political negotiations within the urban evolution of the city. Historically marginalized from standard urban historiographies, the Banjara community retains an alternate memory of Bhagya Nagar through vibrant musical storytelling. The research employs qualitative textual analysis of selected folk lyrics, tracking themes of migration, labor, romanticized folklore, and displacement. By analyzing the linguistic structures and emotional resonance of these songs, the paper demonstrates how subaltern expressions challenge dominant, elite historical discourses of the Deccan region. Ultimately, this study posits that Banjara folk music is not merely passive cultural preservation, but an active, resilient form of subaltern historiography that reclaims the community’s rightful space in the historical consciousness of Hyderabad. |
